Overse
The national side depicts a profile portrait of the navigator Juan Sebastián Elcano. On the right are the years of the expedition "1519 1522". On the left is the mark of the Madrid Mint (the letter "M" crowned with a crown). In the background is a stylized image of the globe, symbolizing the circumnavigation of the world. On the right is the inscription "ESPAÑA 2022". At the bottom of the coin is the Latin inscription "JUAN SEBASTIÁN ELCANO PRIMUS CIRCUMDEDISTI ME" (Juan Sebastian Elcano - the first to circumnavigate me), which was given to him by Emperor Charles V as a motto. On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the EU.
Reverse
The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix (Royal Belgian Mint). It depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders - a symbol of European unity. On the left is a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right is a map with six thin horizontal lines in the background. On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the European Union. The band is finely fluted and the inscription "2 ★", repeated six times alternately upright and inverted.
Historical context
The First Voyage Around the World (1519-1522) was a historic expedition of the Spanish fleet led by the Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan, which ended under the command of Juan Sebastián Elcano and for the first time proved the sphericity of the Earth in practice. The expedition set off from Sanlúcar de Barrameda (Spain) on September 20, 1519 — 5 ships (Trinidad, San Antonio, Concepción, Santiago, Victoria) with 234-270 sailors on board — in search of the Spice Islands with the aim of opening a western route to them. Magellan died on April 27, 1521 in the Philippines in the Battle of Mactan. The only ship to return, the Victoria, arrived in Sanlúcar on 6 September 1522 with just 18 crew members under the command of Basque captain Juan Sebastián Elcano (1486/87-1526). The voyage took 3 years and covered some 81,000 km, paving the way for the globalization of world trade.
