Overse
The national side of the coin depicts the official logo of the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2023. In the center is a stylized graphic composition symbolizing the unification of Spain and the European Union, using geometric elements and colors of the Spanish flag and the EU flag. Inscriptions: "PRESIDENCIA ESPAÑOLA CONSEJO DE LA UNIÓN EUROPEA" (Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union) and "ESPAÑA 2023". Also on the coin's field is the Madrid mint mark (the letter "M" surmounted by a crown). On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the EU.
Reverse
The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix (Royal Belgian Mint). It depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders - a symbol of European unity. On the left is a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right is a map with six thin horizontal lines in the background. On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the European Union. The band is finely fluted and has the inscription "2 ★", repeated six times, alternating upright and inverted.
Historical context
The Presidency of the Council of the European Union is a position that rotates from one EU member state to another every six months (1 January - 30 June and 1 July - 31 December) according to a set schedule. The presidency organizes Council meetings, conducts negotiations between states, sets priorities and represents the Council in relations with other EU institutions. Spain chaired the Council of the EU in the second half of 2023 (1 July - 31 December 2023) - the fifth time in history (after 1989, 1995, 2002 and 2010). The priorities of the Spanish presidency were: reindustrialization of the EU and ensuring open strategic autonomy; promoting the green transition and environmental adaptation; strengthening social and economic justice; strengthening European unity. The motto of the presidency is “Europe closer” (Europa más cerca). Among the key results is the adoption of the Pact on Migration and Asylum.
