Obverse

On the national side, in the center of the coin, the official emblem of the Spanish National Police Corps (Cuerpo Nacional de Policía) is depicted, with heraldic elements: a central shield surrounded by rays and crowned with a crown, symbolizing authority and protection. At the top, along the arc, is the inscription "POLICÍA NACIONAL" and the years "1824 - 2024". At the bottom, the inscription "ESPAÑA" and the mark of the Madrid Mint (the letter "M" crowned with a crown). On the outer ring are the 12 five-pointed stars of the European Union.

The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix (Royal Belgian Mint). It depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders - a symbol of European unity. On the left - a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right - a map with six thin horizontal lines in the background. On the outer ring - 12 stars of the European Union. The band - with thin ribbing and the inscription "2 ★", repeated six times alternately upright and inverted.

Historical context

The Spanish National Police Corps (Cuerpo Nacional de Policía) is one of the main law enforcement agencies in Spain, operating under the direction of the Ministry of the Interior. Founded by King Fernando VII on 13 March 1824 as the "Real Cuerpo General de Policía" (Royal General Police Corps), it was the first modern professional police force in Western Europe, preceding the famous Scotland Yard (1829) and the French police forces. It received its current name, the "Cuerpo Nacional de Policía" in 1986, following the reform of the Spanish police force, which merged the Cuerpo Superior de Policía and the Policía Nacional. The corps is responsible for maintaining public order mainly in cities, investigating crimes, providing immigration services, issuing passports and national IDs, and combating terrorism and organized crime. It currently has around 75,000 officers. 2024 is the 200th anniversary year of this remarkable institution.
