Historical context

Salamanca is a historic city in the autonomous community of Castile and León in western Spain, on the Tormes River. Founded in the pre-Roman era by the Veton tribe, the Romans made the city an important point on the Via de la Plata. In 1218, King Alfonso IX of León founded the University of Salamanca here - one of the first in Europe and the third oldest in the world, which is still in operation. The university received papal confirmation from Pope Alexander IV in 1255. In the 15th and 16th centuries, Salamanca flourished: the greatest intellectuals of the Spanish Golden Age studied here - Miguel de Cervantes, Fray Luis de León, Francisco de Vitoria (father of international law), etc. The Salamanca School (Escuela de Salamanca) of the 16th century. made a revolutionary contribution to jurisprudence, theology and economics. The main attractions of the Old Town: the Old and New Cathedrals, the University, the Plaza Mayor (one of the most beautiful in Spain, 18th century), the Roman Bridge, Casa de las Conchas. Inscribed on the UNESCO list on December 9, 1988.
