Commemorative coin of the Italian Republic, 2 euros, issued on May 16, 2015, with a circulation of 3,520,000 copies. Dedicated to the World Exhibition EXPO-2015 in Milan. The author of the design is Silvia Petrassi. Bimetallic, diameter 25.75 mm, weight 8.5 g. Minted at IPZS in Rome.
Obverse
The center of the coin depicts a symbolic composition that conveys the fertility of the earth. Grain, saturated with water, sprouts on a semicircular stylized globe. Next to it are a grape leaf with a bunch, an olive branch and an ear of wheat, emerging from one trunk - symbols of traditional Mediterranean agricultural crops. At the top, in an arc, is the inscription "NUTRIRE IL PIANETA" (Feed the planet). To the right of the composition is the monogram "RI" (Repubblica Italiana) with the mint mark "R" below it. To the left are the author's initials. Below is the official EXPO logo. On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the EU.
Reverse
The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix (Royal Belgian Mint). It depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders - a symbol of European unity. On the left is a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right is a map with six thin horizontal lines in the background. On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the European Union. The band is finely fluted and has the inscription "2 ★", repeated six times, alternating upright and inverted.
Historical context
EXPO 2015 (Esposizione Universale 2015) is a World Fair held in Milan, Italy, from 1 May to 31 October 2015. It was the sixth World Fair held in Italy (the first was in 1906, also in Milan). The theme of the exhibition, "Nutrire il Pianeta, Energia per la Vita" (Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life), addressed global food challenges: how to feed the world's growing population, provide quality food and a healthy lifestyle. The exhibition area, 1.1 km², was located in the town of Rho, a suburb of Milan. 145 countries and 3 international organizations participated in the EXPO, organizing their own pavilions. The exhibition was visited by more than 21.5 million people. The Italian pavilion "Albero della Vita" (Tree of Life) became a landmark symbol. The mascot of the exhibition was Foody - a cheerful character made up of 11 fruits and vegetables, created by Disney.
