Overse
The center of the coin depicts an allegorical composition dedicated to the work of firefighters: the figure of a firefighter in protective equipment with a helmet, who saves people or puts out a fire. At the top, in an arc, is the inscription "CORPO NAZIONALE DEI VIGILI DEL FUOCO" (National Fire Service), the years "1939-2019". Also on the field of the coin are the monogram "RI" (Repubblica Italiana), the mint mark "R" (Rome) and the initials of the author. On the outer ring are 12 five-pointed EU stars.
Reverse
The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix (Royal Belgian Mint). It depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders - a symbol of European unity. On the left - a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right - a map with six thin horizontal lines in the background. On the outer ring - 12 stars of the European Union. The band - with thin ribbing and the inscription "2 ★", repeated six times alternately upright and inverted.
Historical context
The Italian National Fire Brigade (Corpo Nazionale dei Vigili del Fuoco, CNVF) is the state fire and rescue service of Italy, operating under the direction of the Ministry of the Interior. The tradition of the fire service in Italy dates back to ancient Roman times (vigiles urbani of Emperor Augustus, created in 6 AD), but the modern service on a national scale was organized by Royal Decree No. 2472 of 27 February 1939 (motivating the centralization of previously municipal forces), and was finally reorganized on 27 December 1941, i.e. it turned 80 years old in 2019. Today, the corps has about 35,000 people. Functions: firefighting, technical rescue in accidents, search for people, nuclear, chemical and radiological safety, humanitarian missions. In emergency situations (earthquakes - in Assisi, L'Aquila, Central Italy), firefighters are the first rescuers. The motto is "Flammas domamus donamus corda" (We tame the flames and give the heart).
