Description

2 euro commemorative coin of the Italian Republic, issued in 2020 in a circulation of 3,000,000 copies. Dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of Maria Montessori. The author of the design is Claudia Momoni. Bimetallic, diameter 25.75 mm, weight 8.5 g. Minted at IPZS in Rome.

Obverse

The center of the coin depicts a portrait of Maria Montessori with two children - a symbol of her revolutionary pedagogical method. On the right is the surname "MARIA MONTESSORI", below - the dates "1870-2020". Also on the field of the coin - the monogram "RI" (Repubblica Italiana), the mint mark "R" (Rome) and the initials of the author. On the outer ring are the 12 five-pointed stars of the European Union.

Reverse

The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix (Royal Belgian Mint). It depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders - a symbol of European unity. On the left is a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right is a map with six thin horizontal lines in the background. On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the European Union. The band is with a thin groove and the inscription "2 ★", repeated six times alternately upright and inverted.

Historical context

Maria Montessori (Maria Tecla Artemisia Montessori, 1870-1952) is an outstanding Italian doctor, educator, philosopher, one of the most influential figures in the field of education of the 20th century, the author of her own pedagogical method "Montessori". She was born on August 31, 1870 in Chiaravalle (Ancona). In 1896, she became one of the first female doctors in Italy, graduating from the University of Rome "La Sapienza". She worked in the Psychiatric Department of the University of Rome, where she studied children with developmental delays. In 1907, she founded the first "Casa dei Bambini" (Children's House) in Rome in the San Lorenzo district of Rome - the prototype of the Montessori school. Her method is based on freedom, independent research, a specially prepared environment and respect for the child as an active subject of knowledge. In 1939, she was forced to emigrate from fascist Italy, lived in India, where she developed education. She was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize three times (1949, 1950, 1951). She died on May 6, 1952 in Noordwijk aan Zee (Netherlands). Montessori's portrait was depicted on the old 1,000 lire banknote.
