Overse

The center of the coin depicts a man and a woman in medical uniform with masks, stethoscope and medical form - a doctor and a nurse working on the front lines in the fight against COVID-19. At the top is the word "GRAZIE" (Thank you) with a heart symbol on the right - an expression of the gratitude of the Italian people to the medical staff. On the left is an image of the medical cross. In the center is the monogram "RI" (Repubblica Italiana). On the right is the mint mark "R". Below on the left are the designer's initials "CM". At the bottom is the year of issue "2021". On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the EU.

Reverse

The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix (Royal Belgian Mint). It depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders - a symbol of European unity. On the left is a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right is a map with six thin horizontal lines in the background. On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the European Union. The band is finely grooved and has the inscription "2 ★", repeated six times, alternating upright and inverted.

Historical context

The COVID-19 pandemic (2020-2023) is the largest pandemic of the 20th and 21st centuries, caused by the new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, first detected in Wuhan (China) in December 2019. Italy became the first European country to be hit hard by the pandemic at the end of February 2020. Lombardy, Veneto and other northern regions were the first to impose a strict lockdown. Italian medical workers worked in incredibly difficult conditions: overcrowded hospitals, a lack of personal protective equipment, and a high mortality rate among doctors themselves (over 300 doctors died in the first year of the pandemic in Italy). In response to this sacrifice, the Italian people took to their balconies every evening to applaud the doctors. The word "GRAZIE" has become the nation's motto. The coin is a symbol of gratitude not only to doctors and nurses, but also to orderlies, technicians, volunteers - all who risked their lives for others.
