Historical context
Amerigo Vespucci is a sailing school of the Italian Navy, named after the Italian explorer and cartographer Amerigo Vespucci (1454-1512), whose name gave the name to America. The ship was designed by engineer Francesco Rotundi, built at the Reggio Cantieri Navali di Castellammare di Stabia shipyard (near Naples) and launched on February 22, 1931, commissioned on May 15, 1931. It is a three-masted fully equipped sailing ship with a length of 101 m, a width of 15.5 m, and a displacement of 4,146 tons. The main task is to train cadets of the Livorno Naval Academy. Since its construction, it has made dozens of training voyages around the world. The 2023-2025 World Tour is one of the most famous voyages: the ship departed from Genoa on July 1, 2023 and returned to Genoa on June 10, 2025, visiting 29 ports in 28 countries on 5 continents. Amerigo Vespucci has been repeatedly called "the most beautiful ship in the world."
