Jubilees are a tradition introduced by Pope Boniface VIII in 1300, initially every 100 years, and since 1475 every 25 years. The Jubilee Year 2025 was inaugurated by Pope Francis through the opening of the Holy Doors of St. Peter's Basilica on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2024; The closing is scheduled for January 6, 2026. The Holy Doors have since been opened in three other major papal basilicas in Rome—St. Paul's Outside the Walls, Santa Maria Maggiore, and St. John Lateran.
