Overse
The center of the coin depicts a stylized composition with capital Latin letters "IURE" (from de iure - de jure, legally), as well as the date "1921" - the year of official international recognition of Latvia. Around it are the inscriptions: "LATVIJAI 100" (Latvia 100) and the name of the issuing country "LATVIJA". The outer ring of the coin features 12 five-pointed stars of the European Union. Authors: Zane Ernstreite (graphic design).
Reverse
The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix (Royal Belgian Mint). It depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders - a symbol of European unity. On the left - a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right - a map with six thin horizontal lines in the background. On the outer ring - the 12 stars of the European Union. The band is finely grooved and has the Latvian inscription "DIEVS ★ SVĒTĪ ★ LATVIJU" (God bless Latvia - the name of the national anthem).
Historical context
The international recognition of Latvia de jure occurred on January 26, 1921, when the Supreme Council of the Allied Powers (Great Britain, France, Italy, Japan and Belgium) at a conference in Paris officially recognized the Republic of Latvia as an independent sovereign state. By this time, Latvia had already existed as a de facto state since November 18, 1918, when the People's Council proclaimed independence under the leadership of Kārlis Ulmanis at the National Theatre in Riga. During the years 1918-1920, Latvia fought the War of Independence against German troops, Bolshevik forces, and the Vermont-Avanov Army, ending it with the Riga Peace Treaty with Soviet Russia on August 11, 1920. De iure recognition opened the way for Latvia to become a member of the League of Nations (September 22, 1921) and establish diplomatic relations with other countries of the world. In 2018, Latvia already celebrated the 100th anniversary of the declaration of independence, and in 2021 - the 100th anniversary of international recognition.
