Commemorative coin of the Republic of Latvia, 2 euros, issued in 2022 with a circulation of 412,000 copies. Dedicated to financial literacy and prosperity. Minted at the Lithuanian Mint in Vilnius. Bimetallic, diameter 25.75 mm, weight 8.5 g.
Obverse
The center of the coin depicts a stylized tree of prosperity, on the leaves of which, instead of leaves or fruits, there are symbols of money: coins, percent signs, statistical charts. The tree symbolizes that prosperity can grow for everyone if it is planted in the soil of financial literacy. Around it are the inscriptions "FINANŠU PRATĪBA" (Financial Literacy), the name of the country "LATVIJA" and the year "2022". On the outer ring are the 12 five-pointed stars of the European Union.
Reverse
The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix (Royal Belgian Mint). It depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders - a symbol of European unity. On the left is a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right is a map with six thin horizontal lines in the background. On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the European Union. The band is finely fluted and has the Latvian inscription "DIEVS ★ SVĒTĪ ★ LATVIJU" (God bless Latvia - the name of the national anthem).
Historical context
Financial literacy is the ability of people to make informed decisions regarding personal financial management, understand money concepts, plan a budget, and be aware of savings, investments, loans, pensions, and risks. According to research by the Bank of Latvia and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the level of financial literacy in Latvia remains average, which poses challenges for individual economic well-being and overall economic development. The Bank of Latvia, together with the Ministry of Finance, the Financial and Capital Market Commission, schools, and universities, is implementing a national program to improve financial literacy. 2022 has been declared the "Year of Financial Literacy" in Latvia. The coin was part of this campaign, distributed to the general public to remind them of the importance of economic planning. The author of the design is Juris Petraškevičs.
