Description

Commemorative coin of the Republic of Lithuania, 2 euros, issued in 2026. Dedicated to the independent energy sector of Lithuania. Bimetallic, diameter 25.75 mm, weight 8.5 g. Minted at the Lithuanian Mint in Vilnius.

Obverse

The center of the coin depicts the symbolism of energy independence - offshore wind turbines (offshore wind farms in the Baltic), solar panels, and possibly a stylized lightning bolt as a symbol of electricity. The composition conveys Lithuania's transition to green and independent energy sources. Around it is the inscription "ENERGETINĖ NEPRIKLAUSOMYBĖ" (Energy Independence). At the bottom - "LIETUVA", the Lithuanian Mint mark "LMK", the year "2026". On the outer ring are the 12 five-pointed stars of the European Union.

Reverse

The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix (Royal Belgian Mint). It depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders - a symbol of European unity. On the left - a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right - a map with six thin horizontal lines in the background. On the outer ring - 12 stars of the European Union. The band - with thin ribbing and the Lithuanian inscription "LAISVĖ ★ VIENYBĖ ★ GEROVĖ ★" (Freedom, Unity, Prosperity).

Historical context

Energy independence of Lithuania has been one of the most important strategic goals of the country since the restoration of independence in 1990. For decades, Lithuania has been dependent on Russian energy sources (oil, gas, electricity). Key milestones on the path to energy independence: 2014 — opening of the liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Klaipeda ("Independence"), which allowed for gas imports from other sources; 2015 — launch of the LitPol Link (with Poland) and NordBalt (with Sweden) electricity connections, which reduced dependence on Russia. February 8-9, 2025 — a historic event: Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia simultaneously disconnected from BRELL (Belarus, Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania), the Soviet electricity grid, and synchronized with the Continental Europe Synchronous Area (CESA). This put an end to the last infrastructure dependence of the Baltic states on Russia. Offshore wind energy is actively developing in the Baltic Sea — the first large farm is planned for 2028.
