The 12 stars of the European Union are arranged in a semicircle to the right of the monogram. At the top, in an arc, is the year of mintage "2004" together with the mint mark and the engraver's initials, as well as the word "LËTZEBUERG". On the left, there is a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO". On the outer ring are the 12 five-pointed stars of the EU. The band is finely fluted and has the inscription "2 ★", repeated six times alternately upright and inverted.

Historical context

Grand Duke Henri (Henri Albert Gabriel Félix Marie Guillaume, born 16 April 1955) is the Grand Duke of Luxembourg from 7 October 2000 to 3 October 2025, when he abdicated in favour of his son Guillaume V. Henri is the son of the previous Grand Duke Jean and Princess Joséphine-Charlotte of Belgium. He was educated in Switzerland and the UK (Royal Military Academy Sandhurst), and graduated from the University of Geneva with a degree in political science. Since 1980, he has been married to Marie Therese Mestre. They have five children. Grand Duke Henri is a constitutional monarch: he has representative functions, the right to sanction laws, and leads the Armed Forces. Among the major events of his reign are the signing of the Lisbon Treaty in 2007, and his two-time presidency of the Council of the EU (2005, 2015). He has received numerous international awards. This is the first 2-euro coin with his portrait, which symbolized the beginning of Luxembourg's memorable numismatic tradition.
