Obverse
In the center of the coin on the left, there is a portrait of His Royal Highness Grand Duke Henri in right profile, superimposed on a portrait of Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume, which is depicted on the right side. The double portrait symbolizes dynastic continuity. At the bottom is the date "2006", on both sides of which is the letter "S" and the coin symbol. At the top, in an arc, is the inscription "LËTZEBUERG". On the outer ring - 12 five-pointed stars of the European Union.
Reverse
The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the first type (until 2007), designed by Luc Luix. It depicts a map of the enlarged European Union with stylized lines below the map. On the left - a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO". On the outer ring - 12 five-pointed stars of the EU. The band - with fine ribbing and the inscription "2 ★", repeated six times alternately upright and inverted.
Historical context
Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume of Luxembourg (Guillaume Jean Joseph Marie, born 11 November 1981) is the eldest son of Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Theresa. Since 3 October 2025, Grand Duke Guillaume V of Luxembourg has been the successor to the throne after the abdication of his father Henri. He was educated in Switzerland, the Luxembourg Lycée Robert Schuman, and the Sandhurst Military Academy (UK) from 2000 to 2002. He graduated from Brunel University (London) with a bachelor's degree in international relations and political science. On 20 October 2012, he married Countess Stéphanie de Lannoy in Luxembourg. In 2020, their son Charles, the future heir to the throne, was born. In 2006, when he turned 25, Luxembourg issued this coin. In 2025, Guillaume became Grand Duke, ushering in a new era for the country.
