A symbolic combination of two generations of the Nassau-Weilburg dynasty. Around it are the inscriptions: "LËTZEBUERG", the years "1961-2011", as well as the inscription "50 anniversaire de l'accession à la charge de Lieutenant-Représentant par le Grand-Duc Jean" (50th anniversary of the appointment of Grand Duke Jean to the position of Lieutenant-Representative). Historical context

Grand Duke Jean (Jean Benoît Guillaume Robert Antoine Louis Marie Adolphe Marc d'Aviano, 1921-2019) was the Grand Duke of Luxembourg from 12 November 1964 to 7 October 2000. He was born on 5 January 1921, the son of Grand Duchess Charlotte and Prince Félix of Bourbon-Parma. He studied in England; during World War II he served in the Irish Guards of the British Army, participating in the Normandy landings and the liberation of Luxembourg. He married Princess Joséphine-Charlotte of Belgium in 1953 - they had five children, including Henri. On April 28, 1961, he was appointed Lieutenant-Representative of his mother, effectively taking over major administrative functions. He officially ascended the throne on November 12, 1964, after Charlotte's abdication. He abdicated in favor of his son Henri on October 7, 2000. Jean's reign was a period of modernization of Luxembourg, development of the financial sector, and further European integration. He died on April 23, 2019, at the age of 98.
