Description

2 euro commemorative coin of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, issued on November 6, 2014 in a circulation of 1,400,000 copies. Dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the accession to the throne of Grand Duke Jean. Minted at the Royal Netherlands Mint. Bimetallic, diameter 25.75 mm, weight 8.5 g.

Obverse

The center of the coin depicts a double portrait: on the right - the current Grand Duke Henri, on the left behind him - his father Grand Duke Jean. Both portraits are in a three-quarter turn, looking to the left. Below the portraits - their names "HENRI" and "JEAN". In the lower part in the center - the year "2014", on the sides - the marks of the mint master Bruer (sailboat) and the Utrecht mint (winged caduceus). At the top of the arc is the inscription "50e ANNIVERSAIRE DE L'ACCESSION AU TRÔNE DU GRAND-DUC JEAN" (50th anniversary of the accession to the throne of Grand Duke Jean). Between the inscription and the portraits is a crown and the date "1964". On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the EU.

Reverse

The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix (Royal Belgian Mint). It depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders - a symbol of European unity. On the left is a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right is a map with six thin horizontal lines in the background. On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the European Union. The band is finely fluted and has the inscription "2 ★" repeated six times, alternating upright and inverted.

Historical context

Grand Duke Jean (Jean Benoît Guillaume Robert Antoine Louis Marie Adolphe Marc d'Aviano, 5 January 1921 – 23 April 2019) was Grand Duke of Luxembourg from 12 November 1964 to 7 October 2000. The son of Grand Duchess Charlotte and Prince Félix of Bourbon-Parma. During World War II, he served in the British Army in the Irish Guards, participating in the Normandy landings and the liberation of Luxembourg. On 9 April 1953, he married Princess Joséphine-Charlotte of Belgium, sister of King Baudouin. In 1961, Jean's mother, Grand Duchess Charlotte, appointed him Lieutenant-Regent. On 12 November 1964, Charlotte abdicated in favour of Jean. His reign was characterised by economic modernisation, accession to the European Union and the development of Luxembourg. On 7 October 2000, Jean abdicated in favour of his son Henri. He died on 23 April 2019 at the age of 98.
