Historical context
The Nassau-Weilburg dynasty is the main ruling dynasty of Luxembourg, a branch of the House of Nassau, which once ruled the division of the County of Nassau in Germany within the Holy Roman Empire. Until 1890, Luxembourg was in a personal union with the Netherlands - the kings of the Netherlands from the House of Orange-Nassau were the grand dukes. When King-Duke William III died on 23 November 1890, leaving no male heirs, the throne of the Netherlands was inherited by his daughter Wilhelmina. However, Salic law was in force for Luxembourg, which did not allow the female line to inherit the throne. Therefore, the Grand Duchy passed to Adolf, the deposed Duke of Nassau (1817-1905) of the Nassau-Weilburg branch. He became the first Grand Duke of the Nassau-Weilburg dynasty. Since then, the dynasty has ruled Luxembourg continuously. Its representatives: Adolf, William IV, Marie-Adeline, Charlotte, Jean, Henri, and from October 3, 2025 - Guillaume V.
