Description

2 euro commemorative coin of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, issued in 2015 in a circulation of 500,000 copies. Dedicated to the 15th anniversary of the accession to the throne of Grand Duke Henri. Design by Yvette Gastauer-Claire. Minted at the Royal Netherlands Mint. Bimetallic, diameter 25.75 mm, weight 8.5 g.

Obverse

The center of the coin depicts a portrait of Grand Duke Henri in profile, facing left. At the top right is the inscription "HENRI", at the left are the dates "2000-2015" (the year of accession and the 15th anniversary). At the bottom is the name of the issuing country "LËTZEBUERG" and the year of issue "2015", surrounded by the mint and mintmaster marks. The outer ring of the coin features the 12 five-pointed stars of the European Union.

Reverse

The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix (Royal Belgian Mint). It depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders, a symbol of European unity. On the left is a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right is a map with six thin horizontal lines in the background. On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the European Union. The band is finely fluted and has the inscription "2 ★" repeated six times, alternating upright and inverted.

Historical context

Grand Duke Henri (Henri Albert Gabriel Félix Marie Guillaume, born 16 April 1955) is the Grand Duke of Luxembourg from 7 October 2000 to 3 October 2025. The son of Grand Duke Jean and Princess Joséphine-Charlotte of Belgium. He was born in Betzdorf Castle. He was educated at the University of Geneva (political science and international relations), and received military training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (Great Britain). On 14 February 1981, he married Maria Teresa Mestre from Cuba. He has five children: Guillaume (Hereditary Grand Duke), Félix, Louis, Alexandre and Sébastien. On 4 March 1998, Henri was appointed lieutenant-representative of his father, and on 7 October 2000, he ascended the throne upon his father's abdication. On 3 October 2025, Henri himself abdicated in favour of his son, Guillaume V. The 15th anniversary in 2015 was a major milestone in his reign.
