Historical context

The Grand Duchess Charlotte Bridge (Pont Grande-Duchesse Charlotte), also known as the "Red Bridge" (Rout Bréck) because of its characteristic color, is a road and pedestrian bridge in Luxembourg City, connecting the historic center ("Upper Town", Buci plateau) with the Kirchberg district (European quarter). The bridge crosses the Alzette River valley at an altitude of about 74 meters. Length - 355 m, main span - 234 m. Designed by French architect Egon Jux and engineer Louis Kruk. Officially opened on October 24, 1966, since its opening it has become a symbol of modern Luxembourg and one of the most recognizable architectural objects in the country. Named after Grand Duchess Charlotte (1896-1985), mother of Grand Duke Jean, the bridge became a symbol of Luxembourg's economic boom in the second half of the 20th century. In 2017, its renovation was completed with the addition of a tram line.
