Historical context
The Luxembourg Army (Arméi Lëtzebuerg, Armée luxembourgeoise) is a small armed force of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Until 1967, Luxembourg maintained compulsory military service, introduced after World War II in 1944. On 30 June 1967, parliament passed a law replacing compulsory military service with voluntary professional service. This marked a reform of the army - transforming it into a small but highly specialized volunteer force. The Luxembourg army currently has around 900-1,000 soldiers. The only combat unit is a reconnaissance company, which regularly participates in UN, EU and NATO peacekeeping missions (Afghanistan, Kosovo, Mali, Bosnia). The army headquarters is located in Herrenberg-Kaserne in Diekirch. Luxembourg has been a member of NATO since 1949 (one of the founders). In 2017, the country celebrated the 50th anniversary of the transition to a voluntary system with this commemorative coin.
