Historical context

Prince Henry William Frederick of Orange-Nassau (Prins Hendrik Willem Frederik Lodewijk van Oranje-Nassau, 13 June 1820 – 13 January 1879) was the third son of King William II of the Netherlands and Queen Anna Pavlovna (daughter of the Russian Emperor Paul I), and the younger brother of King William III. In 1850, William III appointed Prince Henry as the Governor (luogotenente) of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, a position he held until his death in 1879. This was a period of active economic development: the development of railways (in particular the Guillaume-Luxembourg line), the steel industry (based on the iron ores of the south of the country), the financial system. Prince Henry also headed the Dutch Navy as an admiral. He lived in Walferdange Castle near Luxembourg. He died childless in Walferdange. The modern Grand Duke Henri bears his name. In Luxembourg, Prince Henry is remembered as the "good viceroy" - an energetic and popular ruler who did much for the country.
