Description

2 euro commemorative coin of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, issued in 2021 in a circulation of 250,000 copies. Dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of Grand Duke Jean. Minted at the Royal Netherlands Mint. Bimetallic, diameter 25.75 mm, weight 8.5 g. Issued in two versions: classic and with a hologram.

Obverse

The coin depicts a double portrait: Grand Duke Henri (right) and his father Grand Duke Jean (left). Both are depicted in profile. Above or next to the portraits is the inscription "100e ANNIVERSAIRE DE LA NAISSANCE DU GRAND-DUC JEAN" (100th anniversary of the birth of Grand Duke Jean) and the dates "1921-2021". Below is the name of the country "LËTZEBUERG". On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the EU.

Reverse

The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix (Royal Belgian Mint). It depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders - a symbol of European unity. On the left is a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right is a map with six thin horizontal lines in the background. On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the European Union. The band is finely fluted and the inscription "2 ★", repeated six times alternately upright and inverted.

Historical context

Grand Duke Jean (Jean Benoît Guillaume Robert Antoine Louis Marie Adolphe Marc d'Aviano, 5 January 1921 – 23 April 2019) was the Grand Duke of Luxembourg from 12 November 1964 to 7 October 2000. Son of Grand Duchess Charlotte and Prince Félix of Bourbon-Parma. Born in Berg Castle. Educated in Paris, England and Canada (Laval University, law and politics). During World War II, he served in the British Army in the Irish Guards, participating in the Normandy landings on 11 June 1944, in the battles of Caen and the liberation of Brussels and Luxembourg. In 1953, he married Princess Joséphine-Charlotte of Belgium, sister of King Baudouin. They had 5 children. He abdicated on 7 October 2000 in favour of his son Henri. He died on 23 April 2019 at the age of 98, making him one of the longest-lived members of European royal families.
