Obverse
The coin depicts portraits of Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume and Hereditary Grand Duchess Stephanie. Next to the portraits are their names in a semicircle. The monogram "H" with a crown is the symbol of Grand Duke Henri. On the outer ring are the 12 five-pointed stars of the European Union.
Reverse
The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix (Royal Belgian Mint). It depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders - a symbol of European unity. On the left is a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right is a map with six thin horizontal lines in the background. On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the European Union. The band is finely fluted and has the inscription "2 ★" repeated six times, alternating upright and inverted.
Historical context
Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume (Guillaume Jean Joseph Marie, born 11 November 1981) is the eldest son of Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Theresa. In October 2025, after his father's abdication, he became Grand Duke Guillaume V. In April 2012, it was announced that Guillaume was engaged to Countess Stéphanie de Lannoy (Stéphanie Marie Claudine Christine de Lannoy, born 18 February 1984), daughter of Count Philippe de Lannoy of Belgium and Countess Alice. Stéphanie was educated in Bruges and holds a university degree in Germanic philology. The civil wedding took place on 19 October 2012 at Luxembourg City Hall, and the religious wedding took place on 20 October 2012 at the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Luxembourg. They have two children: Prince Charles (born 10 May 2020) and Prince François (born 27 March 2023). The 10th anniversary of the wedding in 2022 is marked by a commemorative coin.
