Description

2 euro commemorative coin of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, issued in 2022 in a circulation of 500,000 copies. Dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the official flag of Luxembourg. Minted at the Royal Netherlands Mint. Bimetallic, diameter 25.75 mm, weight 8.5 g.

Obverse

The coin depicts a portrait of Grand Duke Henri next to the flag of Luxembourg - a horizontal tricolor (red, white, blue). At the top is the inscription "50 JOER LËTZEBUERGER FAHN" (50 years of the Luxembourg flag). At the bottom is the name of the country "LËTZEBUERG", the dates "1972-2022" and the mint marks. On the outer ring are the 12 five-pointed stars of the European Union.

Reverse

The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix (Royal Belgian Mint). It depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders - a symbol of European unity. On the left - a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right - a map with six thin horizontal lines in the background. On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the European Union. The band - with thin ribbing and the inscription "2 ★", repeated six times alternately upright and inverted.

Historical context

The flag of Luxembourg is a horizontal tricolor of three equal stripes of red, white and blue (from top to bottom). The colors come from the coat of arms of Luxembourg - a red lion on a white and blue background, which has existed since the 13th century (the heraldic symbol of the Counts of Luxembourg since the time of Henry III, Count of Namur, starting in 1240). The tricolor flag has been used unofficially since the 19th century, especially after independence in 1839. However, the flag was officially fixed only by the law of 23 June 1972, which established the exact proportions and shades of colors (it is these proportions that distinguish the Luxembourg flag from the Dutch flag, where the shade of blue is darker and the proportions are different). The flag is actively used in public and private buildings, on national holidays (the Grand Duke's birthday is on 23 June) and other celebrations.
