It depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders - a symbol of European unity. On the left is a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right is a map with six thin horizontal lines in the background. On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the European Union. The band is finely fluted and has the inscription "2 ★", repeated six times, alternately upright and inverted.
Historical context
The Chamber of Deputies of Luxembourg (Chambre des Députés) is a unicameral parliament of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, consisting of 60 deputies elected for a 5-year term by universal, direct, equal and secret elections. It was established by the Constitution of 9 July 1848 as the "Chamber of Deputies" (previously the function was performed by the Estates of the Grand Duchy, from 1841 - the Assembly of the Estates). The Constitution of 1848 created the modern parliamentary system of Luxembourg, effectively introducing representative democracy. The first parliament met in barracks before the current building. The current building of the Chamber of Deputies on rue du Marché-aux-Herbes was opened in 1860, next to the Grand Ducal Palace. The Chamber adopts laws, ratifies international treaties, elects the Prime Minister, and supervises the government. The Speaker of the Chamber is the second most important official in the country after the Grand Duke. The 175th anniversary in 2023 is marked by a commemorative coin in recognition of the country's long-standing democratic tradition.
