Historical context

Grand Duke William II (Dutch: Willem II Frederik George Lodewijk, 6 December 1792 – 17 March 1849) was King of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands and Grand Duke of Luxembourg from 7 October 1840 to 17 March 1849. The eldest son of King William I and Queen Wilhelmina of Prussia. In his youth he served in the British Army under Lord Wellington in Spain (1811–1813), and in 1815 he commanded the United Netherlands Army at the Battle of Waterloo, where he was wounded in the shoulder during the retreat. He was married to Anna Pavlovna, daughter of Emperor Paul I of Russia. After his father's abdication in 1840, he became King-Duke. In 1841, he granted Luxembourg its first Constitution, the basis of its modern statehood. In 1848, before the European Revolution, he issued an even more liberal Constitution of 1848, based on the principles of constitutional monarchy. He died in Tilburg on 17 March 1849.
