Obverse

The center of the coin depicts a portrait of Grand Duke Henri. Nearby are symbols of his long reign: possibly a crown, the state coat of arms or other heraldic elements. Inscriptions: "25e ANNIVERSAIRE DE L'ACCESSION AU TRÔNE DU GRAND-DUC HENRI" (25th anniversary of the accession to the throne of Grand Duke Henri), "LËTZEBUERG", dates "2000-2025". Mint and mintmaster marks. On the outer ring are the 12 five-pointed stars of the European Union.

Reverse

The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix (Royal Belgian Mint). It depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders - a symbol of European unity. On the left is a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right is a map with six thin horizontal lines in the background. On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the European Union. The band is finely fluted and the inscription "2 ★", repeated six times alternately upright and inverted.

Historical context

Grand Duke Henri (Henri Albert Gabriel Félix Marie Guillaume, born 16 April 1955) is the Grand Duke of Luxembourg from 7 October 2000 to 3 October 2025. The son of Grand Duke Jean and Princess Joséphine-Charlotte of Belgium. He was born in Betzdorf Castle. He was educated at the University of Geneva (political science and international relations), and underwent military training at Sandhurst. On 14 February 1981 he married Maria Theresa Mestre. He has five children. On 4 March 1998 he was appointed lieutenant-representative of his father, and on 7 October 2000 he ascended the throne. Henri's reign was marked by economic development, Luxembourg's active role in the EU, the UN, and charitable initiatives. The 25th anniversary was the last important anniversary of his reign - on June 24, 2025, Henri announced his intention to abdicate, and on October 3, 2025, he officially abdicated in favor of his son, the new Grand Duke Guillaume V. Thus ended Henri's 25-year reign.
