Obverse

On the left of the coin is a portrait of Grand Duke Henri, on the right is a portrait of Robert Schuman. Schuman was born in Luxembourg, so this coin has a special national significance. Inscriptions: "LËTZEBUERG", "75e ANNIVERSAIRE / DÉCLARATION SCHUMAN" (75th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration) and the dates "1950-2025". On the outer ring are the 12 five-pointed stars of the European Union.

Reverse

The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix (Royal Belgian Mint). It depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders - a symbol of European unity. On the left is a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right is a map with six thin horizontal lines in the background. On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the European Union. The band is finely fluted and has the inscription "2 ★", repeated six times, alternately upright and inverted.

Historical context

The Schuman Declaration is a historic speech by French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman (1886-1963), delivered on May 9, 1950 in Paris. In it, Schuman proposed placing French and German coal and steel production under a common High Management in an organization open to other European countries. This specific proposal became the basis for the future European Coal and Steel Community (the Treaty establishing it was signed on April 18, 1951 in Paris by six countries: France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg), which became the predecessor of the European Economic Community (1957) and the modern European Union. Robert Schuman is one of the "fathers of Europe" along with Jean Monnet, Konrad Adenauer, and Alcide De Gasperi. He was born on June 29, 1886 in Clausen (then Luxembourg, now a district of the capital), and received French citizenship after World War I. May 9 is celebrated every year as Europe Day. The 75th anniversary in 2025 is an important milestone in European integration.
