Overse
The center of the coin depicts a stylized children's composition - children holding hands, symbolizing love, friendship and unity. The design is inspired by the work of Maltese schoolchildren who participated in a special creative competition. On the right, in an arc, are the inscriptions "Imħabba" (Love, love in Maltese) and "MALTA 2016". On the outer ring are the 12 five-pointed stars of the European Union.
Reverse
The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix (Royal Belgian Mint). It depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders - a symbol of European unity. On the left - a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right - a map with six thin horizontal lines in the background. On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the European Union. The band - with fine ribbing, with a Maltese cross and the inscription "★ 2 ★".
Historical context
The "Children's Solidarity" series (Solidarietà mit-Tfal) is a unique Maltese initiative that combines numismatics with children's creativity and charity. In the series, which covers the period 2016-2020, the coins are dedicated to different themes: Love (2016), Peace (2017), Cultural Heritage (2018), Nature (2019) and Games (2020). The designs of each coin are developed as a result of an open competition among Maltese schoolchildren. The proceeds from the sale of special issues in coincards are transferred to charitable purposes - supporting children's programs. This makes the series not only artistically unique, but also socially significant. The theme "Love" (Imħabba) in 2016 emphasizes universal human values, friendship and unity. The children's drawing of the winner of the competition was adapted by a professional graphic artist for the monetary format. The series has earned wide international recognition as an example of involving young people in national culture.
