Description

A 2 euro commemorative coin of the Republic of Malta, issued in 2018 in a circulation of 350,000 copies. The third in the "Children's Solidarity" series. It was minted at the Paris Mint. Bimetallic, diameter 25.75 mm, weight 8.5 g.

Overse

The center of the coin depicts a stylized children's composition symbolizing cultural heritage: children studying, examining or interacting with elements of Maltese cultural heritage - megalithic temples, the Maltese lutzzu boat, traditional architectural elements. On the right - the inscription "Patrimonju Kulturali" (Cultural Heritage in Maltese) and "MALTA 2018". On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the EU.

Reverse

The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix (Royal Belgian Mint). It depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders - a symbol of European unity. On the left is a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right is a map with six thin horizontal lines in the background. On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the European Union. The band is finely fluted, with a Maltese cross and the inscription "★ 2 ★".

Historical context

The theme "Cultural Heritage" (Patrimonju Kulturali) in the Maltese series "Children's Solidarity" 2018 is dedicated to the wealth of Maltese cultural heritage, which the younger generation must preserve and pass on. Malta is a small island, but it has one of the richest cultural heritages in the world: 3 UNESCO sites (megalithic temples, Hal Saflieni Hypogeum, the city of Valletta), numerous archaeological finds from the Neolithic to the Roman era, knightly architecture of the 16th-18th centuries, the unique Maltese language (the only Semitic language in the EU), traditional crafts (filigree silver, glass, ceramics, lace). The coin was launched to coincide with Valletta being the European Capital of Culture in 2018 (together with Leeuwarden in the Netherlands). The design was chosen following a creative competition among Maltese schoolchildren, thus making children conscious guardians of their cultural code.
