A 2 euro commemorative coin of the Republic of Malta, issued in 2019 in a circulation of 350,000 copies. The fourth in the "Children's Solidarity" series. It was minted at the Paris Mint. Bimetallic, diameter 25.75 mm, weight 8.5 g.
Obverse
The center of the coin depicts a stylized children's composition, symbolizing the harmony of man and nature: children together with animals and plants, possibly in the Maltese natural landscape. The design is inspired by the works of Maltese schoolchildren. On the right is the inscription "Natura" (Nature in Maltese) and "MALTA 2019". On the outer ring - 12 EU stars.
Reverse
The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix (Royal Belgian Mint). It depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders - a symbol of European unity. On the left - a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right - a map with six thin horizontal lines in the background. On the outer ring - 12 stars of the European Union. The edge - with fine ribbing, with a Maltese cross and the inscription "★ 2 ★".
Historical context
The theme "Nature" (Natura) in the Maltese "Children's Solidarity" series of 2019 is dedicated to the importance of environmental protection and emphasizing the connection between man and nature. Malta is a small country (area 316 km²), but it has a unique natural heritage: endemic species (Maltese waterfowl, Maltese wild thyme), protected coastal areas (Dingley Rock, Filfla Island), megalithic temples in the natural landscape, the Ghadira and Simar reserves. The series "Children's Solidarity" (Solidarietà mit-Tfal), which lasted from 2016 to 2020, successfully combined education, art and charity - children not only learned about the importance of ecology, but also through their creative works conveyed these values to the whole society. The funds from the sale of special coincards were transferred to children's education and health care programs. The theme of nature is also relevant in the context of climate change and the problems of the Mediterranean.
