Obverse
In the center of the coin is a double portrait of Prince Albert II of Monaco and Princess Charlene in profile, turned to the right - updated compared to the 2011 coin. At the bottom - "MONACO 2021" and the dates "2011-2021". On the right - the mark of the Paris Mint. On the outer ring are the 12 five-pointed stars of the European Union.
Reverse
The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix (Royal Belgian Mint). It depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders - a symbol of European unity. On the left is a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right is a map with six thin horizontal lines in the background. On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the European Union. The band is finely fluted and has the inscription "2 ★" repeated six times, alternating upright and inverted.
Historical context
On 1–2 July 2011, the royal wedding of Prince Albert II Grimaldi and Charlene Linette Wittstock took place in Monaco - the most important royal event in Monaco since 1956. Prince Albert II (born 14 March 1958) is the son of Prince Rainier III and Princess Grace Kelly, and ascended the throne on 6 April 2005. Charlene (born 25 January 1978, Bulawayo, Southern Rhodesia) is a former Olympic swimmer from South Africa who represented her country at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Their twin children were born on 10 December 2014: Hereditary Prince Jacques Honoré Rainier and Princess Gabriella Thérèse Marie. Under Monegasque law, the first-born male child is first in line to the throne even if born second (Jacques was born two minutes after Gabriella). The 10th anniversary in 2021 was marked by a commemorative coin minted in 15,000—the standard version in a cream box and the Monegasque version in white.
