Historical context

On June 7, 1524, in the city of Burgos (Spain), a Treaty was signed between the Lord of Monaco, Augustin I Grimaldi (Augustin I, c. 1482-1532) and the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V of Habsburg. According to this treaty, Monaco passed from French protection to Spanish-Imperial protection. Charles V officially recognized the sovereignty of the Lord of Monaco and granted him privileges regarding trade in Spanish possessions. This occurred in the context of the Italian Wars (1521-1526), when France and the Empire fought for dominance in the Mediterranean. The treaty was important for Monaco, providing a guarantee against French ambitions, but at the same time reducing the independence of the principality. Spanish suzerainty lasted for over a century, until 1641, when Prince Honoré II concluded the Treaty of Peron with France and restored the French protectorate, in which Monaco remained until the French Revolution. The treaty of 1524 is an important milestone in the long history of diplomacy of the Grimaldi dynasty, which managed to survive alongside powerful European neighbors.
