Description

Commemorative coin of the Principality of Monaco, 2 euros, issued in 2025 in a circulation of 15,000 copies. Dedicated to the County of Carladès. Minted at the Paris Mint. Bimetallic, diameter 25.75 mm, weight 8.5 g.

Obverse

In the center of the coin is the coat of arms of the County of Carladès - a traditional heraldic composition with specific elements (for example, a castle or a tower). Around are the inscriptions: "COMTÉ DE CARLADÈS", "MONACO" and the year "2025". On the right is the mark of the Paris Mint. On the outer ring are the 12 five-pointed stars of the European Union.

Reverse

The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix (Royal Belgian Mint). It depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders - a symbol of European unity. On the left - a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right - a map with six thin horizontal lines in the background. On the outer ring - 12 stars of the European Union. The edge - with thin ribbing and the inscription "2 ★", repeated six times alternately upright and inverted.

Historical context

The County of Carladès (Comté de Carladès) is a historical feudal possession in the territory of the modern department of Cantal (Auvergne region) in central France, around the city of Carladès. The Grimaldi received Carlades in 1643 from King Louis XIII (actually Cardinal Mazarin) as compensation for losses in Italy and as a declaration of loyalty to the French crown. The transfer was the result of the Treaty of Peronne in 1641, by which Prince Honoré II Grimaldi restored the French protectorate over Monaco. Carlades was an important part of the Grimaldi family's income: it gave them the status of French nobility, access to the court of Versailles, and a percentage of the tax revenues. The county remained in Grimaldi hands until the French Revolution, when it was confiscated in 1789. However, the historical title "Count of Carlades" was preserved in the nomenclature of the dynasty. The current Prince Albert II officially bears "Count of Carlades" among his titles. The 2025 coin commemorates this forgotten but important part of the Grimaldi family history.
