Description

A 2 euro commemorative coin of the Netherlands, issued in 2014 in a circulation of 350,000 copies. The first official 2 euro coin with a new king. It was minted at the Royal Netherlands Mint. Bimetallic, diameter 25.75 mm, weight 8.5 g.

Overse

The coin depicts a double portrait - King Willem-Alexander (in front, in profile on the right) and his mother, former Queen Beatrix (behind him, in profile on the right). Inscriptions: "Willem-Alexander Koning der Nederlanden" (Willem-Alexander King of the Netherlands). Below - the year "2014". The mark of the Netherlands mint (winged caduceus) and the mintmaster's mark. On the outer ring are the 12 five-pointed stars of the EU.

Reverse

The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix (Royal Belgian Mint). It depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders - a symbol of European unity. On the left is a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right is a map with six thin horizontal lines in the background. On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the European Union. The band is finely grooved and has the inscription "GOD ★ ZIJ ★ MET ★ ONS ★" (God is with us).

Historical context

King Willem-Alexander (full name Willem-Alexander Claus Georg Ferdinand, born 27 April 1967) is the King of the Netherlands since 30 April 2013. The first King of the Netherlands in the last 123 years - after the reigns of three queens (Wilhelmina, Juliana, Beatrix). The eldest son of Queen Beatrix and Prince Claus. Born in Utrecht. Educated at the Atlantic College (Wales), Leiden University (history), Royal Air Force College Cranwell (pilot). On 2 February 2002 he married Maxima Sorreguieta (Argentine). He has three daughters: Catharina-Amalia (born 2003, heir to the throne), Alexia (born 2005), and Ariane (born 2007). He worked as a television commentator and was active in sports - full marathon, speed skating. Before his coronation, he worked on water management issues and represented the Netherlands at the UN. His accession to the throne on April 30, 2013, was one of the greatest events in Dutch history.
