A 2 euro commemorative coin of the Netherlands, issued in 2024 in a circulation of 500,000 copies. Dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the accession of King Willem-Alexander to the throne. It was minted at the Royal Netherlands Mint. Bimetallic, diameter 25.75 mm, weight 8.5 g.
Obverse
The center of the coin depicts a portrait of King Willem-Alexander - updated compared to previous coins. The inscriptions: "Willem-Alexander Koning der Nederlanden" (Willem-Alexander King of the Netherlands) and the dates "2013-2023" or "2013-2024". Below is the mark of the Netherlands mint (winged caduceus) and the mintmaster's mark. On the outer ring are the 12 five-pointed stars of the EU.
Reverse
The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix (Royal Belgian Mint). It depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders - a symbol of European unity. On the left is a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right is a map with six thin horizontal lines in the background. On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the European Union. The band is finely fluted and has the inscription "GOD ★ ZIJ ★ MET ★ ONS ★" (God is with us).
Historical context
King Willem-Alexander (born 27 April 1967) is the King of the Netherlands since 30 April 2013, the first king of the Netherlands in 123 years. The eldest son of Queen Beatrix and Prince Claus. He was born in Utrecht, and was educated at Leiden University (history) and other institutions. On 2 February 2002 he married Máxima Sorreguieta (Argentine). He has three daughters: Hereditary Princess Catharina-Amalia (born 2003), Alexia (born 2005), and Ariane (born 2007). The first 10 years of Willem-Alexander's reign are marked by the continued prosperity of the Netherlands - one of the richest countries in the EU, a leader in the port business (Rotterdam is the largest port in Europe), agriculture (the second in the world in terms of agricultural exports), and technology. The king actively promoted international relations, represented the country at the UN and the EU. The couple demonstrates a modern, open monarchy. The 10th anniversary in 2023-2024 is marked by a commemorative coin.
