On the left is a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right is a map with six thin horizontal lines in the background. On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the European Union. The band is finely fluted and has the German inscription "EINIGKEIT UND RECHT UND FREIHEIT" (Unity and Law and Freedom - words from the German anthem).

Historical context

Neuschwanstein Castle (Schloss Neuschwanstein, "New Swan Stone") is one of the most famous castles in the world, located in the Allgäu Alps near Füssen in Bavaria. Built by order of King Ludwig II of Bavaria (known as the "Fairytale King", "Mad Ludwig"). Construction began on September 5, 1869, continued until Ludwig's death on June 13, 1886, and was not fully completed. Architect: Eduard Riedel (under the supervision of set designer Christian Jank). The style is neo-Romanesque, inspired by Romanticism and medieval chivalry, especially the operas of Richard Wagner. King Ludwig II lived in the castle for only 172 days before his mysterious death in Lake Starnberg. 7 weeks after his death, the castle was opened to the public. Today, Neuschwanstein is visited by over 1.4 million tourists each year. Walt Disney used the silhouette of the castle as a model for Sleeping Beauty Castle. Bavaria is the largest federal state in Germany, and its capital is Munich.
