Reverse

The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix (Royal Belgian Mint). It depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders - a symbol of European unity. On the left is a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right is a map with six thin horizontal lines in the background. On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the European Union. The band is finely fluted and has the German inscription "EINIGKEIT UND RECHT UND FREIHEIT" (Unity and Law and Freedom - words from the German anthem).

Historical context

Maulbronn Monastery (Kloster Maulbronn) is a former Cistercian monastery in the city of Maulbronn (Baden-Württemberg), one of the best-preserved medieval monasteries in Europe. Founded in 1147 by monks from Neuburg (Alsace) and officially opened on March 23, 1148. Construction lasted over 200 years - until the 1370s. In 1534, during the Reformation, the monastery was secularized, and from 1556 a Protestant seminary school operated here, where many prominent figures studied: astronomer Johannes Kepler, poet Friedrich Hölderlin, novelist Hermann Hesse (his novel "Under the Wheels" is based on the experience in Maulbronn). The architecture of the monastery is a transition from Romanesque to Gothic. The church's antechamber is especially famous - "Paradise House" (Paradies). In 1993, Maulbronn Monastery was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Baden-Württemberg is the third largest state in Germany, the capital is Stuttgart.
