Obverse

In the center of the coin is depicted the facade of the Paulskirche - a characteristic round building in the neoclassical style with a dome and a small tower. Above - "HESSEN". Below - the mint mark, year. On the left - "BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND". On the outer ring are the 12 five-pointed stars of the European Union.

Reverse

The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix (Royal Belgian Mint). It depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders - a symbol of European unity. On the left is a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right is a map with six thin horizontal lines in the background. On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the European Union. The band is finely fluted and has the German inscription "EINIGKEIT UND RECHT UND FREIHEIT" (Unity and Law and Freedom - words from the German anthem).

Historical context

The Paulskirche (St. Paul's Church) in Frankfurt am Main is one of the most important symbolic places of German democracy. Built in 1789-1833 as a Protestant church in the neoclassical style. It is distinguished by its circular planning scheme - a rarity for a Protestant church. In 1848-1849, the Frankfurter Nationalversammlung (Frankfurt National Assembly) - the first freely elected parliament in Germany, which developed the first German constitution (the Paulskirchen Constitution of 1849), which provided for a unified constitutional monarchy - met here. Although the constitution was rejected by the Prussian king, its provisions became the basis for future German constitutions. After being destroyed during World War II (1944), the Paulskirche was the first public building in Frankfurt to be rebuilt after the war (1948). Today it is a national memorial and the venue for the German Book Trade Peace Prize. Hesse is a federal state with Wiesbaden as its capital and Frankfurt as its financial center.
