Reverse
The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix (Royal Belgian Mint). It depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders - a symbol of European unity. On the left is a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right is a map with six thin horizontal lines in the background. On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the European Union. The band is with fine ribbing and the German inscription "EINIGKEIT UND RECHT UND FREIHEIT" (Unity and Law and Freedom).
Historical context
Helmut Heinrich Waldemar Schmidt (December 23, 1918 - November 10, 2015) was a German politician, member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), the fifth Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany from May 16, 1974 to October 1, 1982. Born in Hamburg. He fought in the Wehrmacht on the Eastern Front in World War II (awarded the Iron Cross). After the war, he graduated from the University of Hamburg (economics). In 1953-1962 - a deputy of the Bundestag. He became famous for his energetic work as a senator for Hamburg during the floods of 1962. Minister of Defense (1969-1972), Minister of Finance (1972-1974). Chancellor after the resignation of Willy Brandt in 1974. His chancellorship was a period of economic crisis (oil crisis 1973), terrorist threat (RAF - German Autumn 1977), and the fight against inflation. One of the initiators of the European Monetary System (1979) and the G7. He lost his position in 1982 due to a vote of no confidence. Died on November 10, 2015.
