Historical context
Magdeburg Cathedral (Magdeburger Dom, full name Dom zu Magdeburg St. Mauritius und Katharina) is a cathedral in Magdeburg, the capital of Saxony-Anhalt. The first Gothic cathedral in Germany. Construction began in 1209 after the previous Romanesque cathedral burned down in 1207. It was completed only in 1520 - after more than 300 years of construction. The architecture is early German Gothic with French influence. The height of the spires is 99.25 m. Emperor Otto I the Great (912-973), king of the East Frankish Kingdom and the first emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, and his wife Edith of England are buried in the cathedral. In 1567 it became the seat of a Lutheran bishop. The cathedral was damaged during the Thirty Years' War (Magdeburg Bloody Everlasting in 1631) and World War II (1944), but was restored. Saxony-Anhalt is a new state of the Federal Republic of Germany, formed in 1990 from the territories of the Magdeburg and Gallen districts of the GDR. The capital is Magdeburg.
