Historical context

Wartburg Castle is a medieval castle near Eisenach in Thuringia, at an altitude of 411 m above sea level. Founded around 1067 by Ludwig Stribun, Count of Thuringia. The castle played a key role in German culture and history. In the 13th century, under Landgrave Hermann I of Thuringia, the Wartburg was the center of the Minnesinger poetic movement - the site of the legendary Sängerkrieg (Battle of the Singers) of 1207, where Walter von der Vogelweide, Wolfram von Eschenbach and others competed. Saint Elizabeth of Thuringia lived here from 1211 to 1228. In 1521 to 1522, Martin Luther hid in the Wartburg after the Edict of Worms in 1521, where he translated the New Testament from Greek into German - a fundamental moment for the development of the German literary language. In 1817, the Wartburg Fest was held here - a student demonstration for the unification of Germany. In 1999, the castle was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Thuringia is a federal state with the capital Erfurt.
