Historical context
Saarland is the smallest federal state of Germany in terms of area (2,569 km²), located in the southwest of the country on the border with France and Luxembourg. The capital is Saarbrücken. The land has a unique history: three times (after the First and Second World Wars) it was under the French mandate. After a referendum in 1955, the inhabitants decided to join the Federal Republic of Germany, which happened on January 1, 1957 (which is why Saarland was not a founding member of the Federal Republic of Germany). Weltkugel (Weltkugel) is a sculptural composition, a symbol of Saarbrücken as a city at the crossroads of cultures. Located near the University of Saarland. The universal Saarland is characterized by a trilingual environment (German, French, Lorraine-German dialect). An industrial region, traditionally a center of the steel industry and coal mining (now mostly in the past). Today, a post-industrial region with a university, computer science, banks. In 2025, Saarland received its second 2-euro coin in the series - after the Ludwigskirche in 2009.
