Commemorative coin of 2 euros of Germany, issued in 2026. Dedicated to Bremen. Minted at five German mints. Total circulation of about 30 million copies. Bimetallic, diameter 25.75 mm, weight 8.5 g.
Overse
In the center of the coin is depicted an architectural or cultural symbol of Bremen - possibly a sculpture of the Bremen Town Musicians (statue of Gerhard Marx, 1953) - a donkey, a dog, a cat and a rooster standing on top of each other. Either the facade of the Town Hall, or the statue of Roland. Above - "BREMEN", below - the mint mark. On the left - "BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND". On the outer ring are the 12 five-pointed stars of the EU.
Reverse
The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix (Royal Belgian Mint). It depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders - a symbol of European unity. On the left is a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right is a map with six thin horizontal lines in the background. On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the European Union. The rim is finely fluted and the German inscription "EINIGKEIT UND RECHT UND FREIHEIT" (Unity and Law and Freedom).
Historical context
Bremen is the second coin of the Federal Republic of Germany dedicated to this free Hanseatic land (the previous one was in 2010, dedicated to the Town Hall and Roland). Bremen is the smallest federal state of Germany (area 404 km², about 0.7 million inhabitants), consists of two cities: Bremen and Bremerhaven (seaport). Bremen was founded in 787 by Charlemagne, from the 9th century - a cathedral city, from 1186 - a free imperial city. Member of the Hanseatic League since the 13th century. An independent city republic for most of its history. In 1949 - one of the founders of the Federal Republic of Germany. Among the famous monuments: the Town Hall and the Roland statue (UNESCO since 2004), St. Peter's House (11th century), the Schnoor Quarter (medieval). The Bremen Town Musicians (Bremer Stadtmusikanten) are especially famous - the heroes of the fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm from 1819 (although in the fairy tale itself the animals do not reach Bremen). The sculpture of the Bremen Town Musicians by Gerhard Marx (1953) stands near the Town Hall - the most photographed symbol of the city.
