Description

Commemorative coin of 2 euros of Portugal, issued in 2009 with a circulation of 1,250,000 copies. Dedicated to the II Lusophone Games. Minted at INCM, Lisbon. Bimetallic, diameter 25.75 mm, weight 8.5 g.

Obverse

The center of the coin depicts a stylized figure of an athlete, symbolizing the Lusophone Games. The logo of the games is the colors of the flags of the participating countries. At the top — "II JOGOS DA LUSOFONIA", at the bottom — "PORTUGAL 2009". INCM mark. On the outer ring — 12 five-pointed stars of the European Union.

Reverse

The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix (Royal Belgian Mint). Depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders - a symbol of European unity. On the left - a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right - a map with six thin horizontal lines on the background. On the outer ring - 12 stars of the European Union. The band - with thin ribbing and an inscription of five shields alternating with seven castles - motifs of the Portuguese coat of arms.

Historical context

The Lusofonia Games (Jogos da Lusofonia) are multi-sport competitions held among countries and territories where Portuguese is an official language (the so-called Lusofonia - the Portuguese-speaking world). They are organized by the Asociação dos Comités Olímpicos de Língua Oficial Portuguesa (ACOLOP). The first Games were held in 2006 in Macau (China). The II Lusophone Games were held in Lisbon (Portugal) from 11 to 19 July 2009. Athletes from 12 countries and territories took part in them: Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe, Timor-Leste, Macau, Goa (India), Equatorial Guinea, Sri Lanka. Competitions were held in 12 sports: football, athletics, badminton, basketball, volleyball, judo, swimming, tennis, table tennis, taekwondo. In total, about 1,100 athletes. Brazil won the medal standings. The III Games were held in Goa in 2014, and the IV in Luanda in 2025.
