Historical context

The Portuguese Republic was proclaimed on 5 October 1910 as a result of the Revolution of 4–5 October, which overthrew the monarchy of the Braganza dynasty and exiled the last king, Manuel II, to Great Britain. The revolution was led by republican military officers, intellectuals, and journalists, united in the Portuguese Republican Party. The final blow to the monarchy was the assassination of King Carlos I and his son Luiz Felipe on 1 February 1908. Prime Minister João Franco ruled in a dictatorial regime, which caused discontent. The Revolution of 4 October 1910 began in Lisbon with an armed uprising; On October 5, the Republic was proclaimed from the balcony of the city hall. The first president of the provisional government was Teofilo Braga (writer). In 1911, the first republican Constitution was adopted. The First Republic lasted until 1926, when a military coup led to the Estado Novo Salazar. The current Third Republic has been in force since 1976, after the Carnation Revolution of 1974.
