Historical context
The International Year of Family Farming - proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 2014 by resolution 66/222 of 22 December 2011. The aim was to raise awareness of the importance of family farming and small farms in reducing hunger and poverty, ensuring food security, improving nutrition, managing natural resources, and protecting the environment. Family farming is the predominant form of agricultural production in the world: about 500 million families are engaged in it, producing up to 80% of the food in many countries. In Portugal, family farming is the traditional basis of the rural economy, especially in Alentejo, Beira, Trás uz Montes. About 80% of agricultural enterprises in Portugal are family farms. They produce wine (Dora, Vinho Verde), olive oil, cheese, cork, fruit. However, the sector faces challenges - an aging population, rural depopulation, competition. The UN program has called for supporting family farmers through policies and investments.
