Historical context
Imprensa Nacional - Casa da Moeda (INCM, National Printing House - Mint) is a Portuguese state institution that combines two historical institutions: Casa da Moeda (Mint, founded in 1140 under the first king Afonso I) and Imprensa Nacional (National Printing House, founded on December 18, 1768 by King José I by order of the Marquis of Pombal). In 1972, the two institutions were merged into one - INCM, which has remained state-owned since then and performs important functions: minting all Portuguese coins (including the euro since 2002); printing escudo banknotes before the transition to the euro; printing of official documents - passports, ID cards, election ballots, government forms; printing of the Diário da República - the official gazette of laws; printing of books (especially academic and national classics). Located in the Campulido quarter of Lisbon. Has the mirror name Imprensa Nacional - Casa da Moeda. In 2018, the 250th anniversary of the founding institution was celebrated.
