Commemorative coin of 2 euros of Portugal, issued in 2020 with a circulation of 520,000 copies. Dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the UN. Minted at INCM, Lisbon. Bimetallic, diameter 25.75 mm, weight 8.5 g.
Obverse
In the center of the coin is the UN emblem - a world map in perspective from the North Pole, surrounded by olive branches of peace. Above - "75 ANOS", below - "ORGANIZAÇÃO DAS NAÇÕES UNIDAS PORTUGAL 2020". Dates "1945-2020". INCM mark. On the outer ring are the 12 five-pointed stars of the European Union.
Reverse
The reverse is the common side of the 2 euro coins of the second type, designed by Luc Luix (Royal Belgian Mint). It depicts a map of Europe as a single continent without internal borders - a symbol of European unity. On the left is a large denomination "2" and the inscription "EURO", on the right is a map with six thin horizontal lines in the background. On the outer ring are the 12 stars of the European Union. The band is finely fluted and inscribed with five shields alternating with seven castles - motifs of the Portuguese coat of arms.
Historical context
The United Nations (UN) is an international organization founded on October 24, 1945, after World War II, to ensure international peace and security, develop friendly relations among nations, promote socio-economic progress, and protect human rights. The founders were 51 countries that signed the UN Charter at a conference in San Francisco on June 26, 1945. Headquarters are in New York (since 1952), additional centers are in Geneva, Vienna, and Nairobi. Structure: General Assembly, Security Council (5 permanent members - USA, USSR/Russia, Great Britain, France, China - with veto power and 10 non-permanent), Secretariat headed by Secretary-General (Antonio Guterres - Portuguese, in office since 2017), Economic and Social Council, International Court of Justice, Trusteeship Council. The UN has 193 members. Portugal joined the UN on December 14, 1955. In 2020 - the 75th anniversary during the COVID-19 pandemic, which particularly emphasized the role of the UN in global cooperation.
